Working Together for Success

Physical Education

Physical Education (P.E.) is an important statutory subject and is taught at Peel Hall Primary School throughout Early Years, following into Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

For the children in early years provision, P.E is covered by the following early learning goals:

  • Moving and Handling – By the end of Early Years provision, children should show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They will move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. They will be able to handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing.
  • Health and self Care – By the end of Early Years provision, children will know the importance for good health of physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. They should be able to manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, this includes dressing and going to the toilet independently

For Key Stage 1 and 2, PE is delivered as three 30-minute lessons throughout the week – Games, Gymnastics and Dance. These lessons are taught by the class teacher.

Children in Year 4 also attend weekly swimming lessons on Tuesday Mornings. During these sessions children are taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

In addition to the curriculum offered in school, Peel Hall Primary School also offers children the chance to enhance their skills further with after schools clubs and outdoor pursuits.
