Music

Aims

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

• perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres,
• styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
• learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
• understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

At Peel Hall Primary School the key aspects of the music curriculum are being covered through a weekly thirty minute lessons taken from the ‘Charanga Music School’.  This scheme of work links directly to the objectives in the 2014 National Curriculum and gives children access to a wide range of musical concepts and experiences.

The Charanga scheme builds upon prior learning. While there are opportunities for children of all abilities to develop their skills and knowledge in each teaching unit, the progression planned into the scheme of work means that the children are increasingly challenged as they move through the school.  It provides lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson

The children love using our new set of glockenspiels, recorders and percussion trolleys to take part practically in these weekly classroom music lessons.

All children also take part in a singing assembly once a week where they learn songs  related to the season and festivals.

At Christmas Key Stage 2 invite parents to join us for the Christmas Christingle to share the songs they have been learning.  Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 put on a nativity play with lots of singing, dancing and acting.

In  addition Year 5 children to have a Peripatetic teacher teaching trombone on a weekly basis.

Extra-curricular Activities

All children are given the opportunity to join the school Choir.  Year 6 children are also invited to a weekly trombone club.
